Get to Know the Counselor

I’m Zachary Spoon, a Licensed Professional Counselor based in Troy, Ohio. I work with adults, couples, and teens who are carrying the weight of anxiety, relationship strain, burnout, and life transitions.

Many of the people I meet describe feeling stuck — at a crossroads where old patterns no longer work but the next step isn’t clear. Together, we slow down, uncover what’s beneath the surface, and rebuild direction, purpose, and confidence from the inside out.

Clinical Background & Education

My work is shaped by clinical training and years of walking alongside people through meaningful change. It blends evidence-based methods with an authentic, relational approach that values both depth and practicality.

Before founding Compass Counseling, I worked in community mental health, private practice, and higher education, supporting adults, couples, and teens navigating anxiety, relational conflict, trauma, and burnout.

I hold a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Ashland University and a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from Mount Vernon Nazarene University—a combination that continues to shape my integrative view of both the science and meaning of human experience.

I am also a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP-I) and draw on current research in attachment, nervous system regulation, and somatic psychology to help clients build lasting emotional stability and self-awareness.

Philosophical / Theoretical Approach to Counseling

The foundation of my work is relational, integrating existential, somatic, and attachment-based approaches. These perspectives help clients reconnect body and mind, deepen emotional awareness, and heal at the root rather than the surface.

My approach blends evidence-based methods with depth-oriented traditions, drawing from Psychodynamic Therapy, Jungian Psychology, Internal Family Systems (IFS), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, Somatic Experiencing, and Existential Therapy.

At its core, therapy is a relationship—one grounded in honesty, curiosity, and respect—where clients can rediscover resilience, purpose, and a steadier sense of self.

Zac’s Thoughts on Counseling

"Struggle has a way of revealing who we are. I don’t believe therapy is about removing pain but about learning how to meet it with honesty, strength, and direction. Growth begins when we stop running from what hurts and start facing it with courage.

Counseling, to me, is a process of rediscovery, helping people remember what steadiness, meaning, and connection feel like. My role is to walk alongside clients as they learn to live with greater awareness, integrity, and compassion for themselves and the people they love.”

Outside of Work:

Outside of work, I spend most of my time with my wife and sons. I love being outdoors—hiking, golfing, or spending weekends at the lake. I also enjoy reading, lifting weights, and finding quiet moments that help me stay grounded and connected.
